What Is Expedition?

Expedition is a Path of Exile league mechanic that tasks you with detonating explosive chains to unearth ancient Kalguuran ruins. Introduced in the Expedition league and retained as a core mechanic, it rewards players who understand how Remnants and vendor currencies interact with each other. Mastering Expedition is one of the best ways to generate valuable currency while mapping.

How the Explosive Mechanic Works

When you encounter an Expedition encounter in a map, you'll see a detonator, explosive barrels, and a chain of connected ruins. Here's how it works:

  1. Place your explosive barrels along the chain — you have a limited number.
  2. Each barrel you place can optionally pass through a Remnant of Corruption (the orange skull markers).
  3. Remnants apply modifiers to the encounter — some beneficial, some dangerous.
  4. Detonate the chain and kill all spawned monsters to collect the buried items.

The key skill is learning which Remnants to include and which to avoid based on your build's survivability.

Understanding Remnant Modifiers

Remnants apply both monster buffs and loot modifiers simultaneously. Some common examples:

  • "Runic Monsters are Empowered" — monsters hit harder but drop more Runic items
  • "Monsters grant no experience" — avoid this unless you only care about loot
  • "Chest items are Corrupted" — great for gambling on corrupted items cheaply
  • "All Magic Items are Identified" — useful for quick vendor value assessment

As your build becomes tankier, including more dangerous Remnants becomes worthwhile for the extra rewards.

The Four Expedition Vendors

After completing an Expedition encounter, you'll earn currency tokens for four unique vendors. Each vendor has their own currency and speciality:

VendorCurrencySpeciality
TujenAstragaliRare and unique items — can haggle for discounts
GwennenExotic CoinageGambles on base items for potential unique drops
RogBroken Circle ArtifactsCrafts items through a series of choices
DannigBlack Scythe ArtifactsSells Logbooks and reroll options

Expedition Logbooks

Logbooks are the premium Expedition experience. They open dedicated Expedition areas with far denser encounters and more rewarding loot tables. Key things to know:

  • Logbooks drop from map Expedition encounters or can be purchased from Dannig.
  • They come in different areas (Utzaal, Kalguur, etc.) with different base layouts.
  • Higher-tier Logbooks with rare item quantity mods are significantly more valuable.
  • Running full Logbooks with dangerous Remnants included is a top-tier currency farming strategy.

Efficient Expedition Mapping Strategy

To get the most out of Expedition encounters in regular maps:

  • Always include as many Remnants as your build can handle safely.
  • Target Remnants that increase the number of chests spawned.
  • Stack Tujen currency for haggling — buying items at 1/3 price and reselling is a reliable profit method.
  • Save Gwennen currency for specific bases you want to gamble for uniques on.
  • Don't neglect Rog if you enjoy crafting — he can produce powerful items through the crafting dialogue.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring Remnants entirely — even with a budget build, mild Remnants are worth the extra difficulty.
  • Spending vendor currency without a plan — know what each vendor offers before dumping artifacts.
  • Skipping Logbooks — they are among the most dense loot experiences in the game.

Expedition is a deep and rewarding mechanic once you understand the interplay of Remnants and vendors. Invest time learning it early in a league and it will pay dividends throughout.
